As a bonsai tree may remain in the same container for several years, the choice of bonsai pot should be made with care.

Ceramic bonsai pots are cheaper to purchase and may seem to be a better value.  In situations where the pot is only going to be in use for a few years, they may indeed be the most economical choice, but when you factor in the much longer lifespan of the mica pots, the price differential evens out.

Does Size Matter?

Professional Series Ceramic Bonsai Pot With Attached Humidity/Drip tray- Rectangle 8.5" x 6.5" x 3.5"

Imported Glazed Ceramic Bonsai Pot -Blue 4.5"x3"x2"

Ceramic Bonsai Pot - Cascade 3.0"x4.0"

Bonsai training pots range from under an inch to more than 18 inches deep. The very shallow bonsai trays are often used to create miniature landscape scenes. The deeper ceramic bonsai pots are used for cascade trees.

A good rule of thumb is that the pot should be at least as deep as the trunk is thick.

The diameter of the bonsai pot should be one third to one half the height of the tree. A large bonsai pot will detract from a small tree. Small bonsai pots will not provide the roots of large trees with enough support. The trees may topple unexpectedly.

Bonsai Pot Colors

Ceramic Bonsai Pot - Rectangle 6.5"x5.25"x2.0"

Ceramic Bonsai Pot Glazed Round - Blue

Ceramic Bonsai Pot - Rectangle 6.125" x 5.0" x 2.125"

Subdued colors are commonly chosen as these will not compete with the beauty of the tree. Sometimes brightly colored glazed ceramic bonsai pots are used with flowering bonsai. The color of the pot should complement or match the flower color.

Trees with light green leaves generally look most attractive when displayed in a light colored pot. Dark leaves harmonize well with red, gray, black or brown bonsai trays.

Ceramic Bonsai Pots

Ceramic Bonsai Pot - Glazed Oval

Ceramic Cascade Bonsai Pot with Attached Tray - Beige

Prof. Series Ceramic Bonsai Pot With Attached Humidity/Drip tray- Oval 8.5" x 6.5" x 3.5"

Ceramic bonsai pots may be unglazed or glazed on the outside only. Make sure there are enough drainage holes to allow good air circulation around the plant’s roots.

Also, be sure that any bonsai clay pots you intend to use with trees that will be spending the winters out of doors are frost proof. Some cheap bonsai pots are only suitable for indoor bonsai as they will crack if frozen.

Hand made Chinese and Japanese bonsai pots are stocked by some bonsai suppliers. Keep an eye open in your travels for elegant antique Japanese and Chinese bonsai pots as these are sought after collectors items.

Mica Bonsai Tree Pots

Mica Bonsai Pot Rectangle 21 1/2"x15"x6"

Bonsai Pot - Mica Cascade - 10.5"x10.5"x10.5"

Mica Bonsai Pot - Oval 17"x11.75"x4.0"

These are professional bonsai pots made to withstand the elements for years on end.  In addition to their superior durability, mica pots moderate the soil temperature, keeping tree roots cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Bonsai Humidity Trays

Humidity/Drip Bonsai Tray/Bonsai Pot (Oval Black) 17."x12.0"x2.0"

Humidity/Drip Bonsai Tray - Heavy Duty Black Plastic 16.5" x 11.0" x 1.5"

Humidity/Drip Bonsai Tray 13.25"x9.5"x0.5"

Fill these shallow trays with pebbles and water to increase the humidity around moisture-loving indoor bonsai.

Bonsai humidity trays also act as drip trays. They catch water as it runs out the drainage holes of the bonsai trees’ pots and keep it from ruining your display tables.
