What is Capsaicin?

Walgreens Capsaicin Cream, 1.5 oz

Capsaicin is a volatile oil extracted from cayenne peppers (actually all hot pepper varieties contain varying amounts of it). It's the stuff that makes chili peppers burn your mouth when you eat them.

You can determine the capsaicin content of peppers by their heat. The hotter the pepper, the more capsaicin it contains.

Capsaicin extract is mixed into various personal care products because of its analgesic and antibacterial effects.

Capsaicin relieves arthritis pain in two ways:

  • It warms the area to which it is applied and increases circulation to it which assists the removal of toxins and increases the flow of nutrients to the affected tissues.
  • It blocks the production of a neurotransmitter called Substance P which sends pain signals to the brain. In so doing, it desensitizes the nerve endings in the area to which it is applied.
However, arthritis pain is not the only kind of pain that capsaicin products work to relieve.

Many people use capsaicin cream for back pain and muscle sprains but pure capsaicin has been demonstrated to be a useful treatment for psoriasis and herpes infections including shingles.

According to the Mayo Clinic, topical capsaicin will ease the pain of neuralgia.

A study done in 2006 demonstrated the effectiveness of the capsaicin patch against peripheral neuropathy. The patch used contained 8% capsaicin and relieved the study participants' pain for 3 months.

Peripheral neuropathy is caused by the death of nerve cells in the hands and feet. It is caused by HIV and by certain HIV drugs and can produce pain severe enough to cause some AIDS patients to discontinue their meds.

Oral analgesics are ineffective against the pain of peripheral neuropathy.

Capsaicin lotion has no unpleasant menthol odor.

How to Safely Use Capsaicin

Topical capsaicin lotions and creams can really burn the first time you use them. If you have very thin or sensitive skin, you may not be able to tolerate these preparations.

Start by using a very small amount of a product with a low concentration of capsaicin--less than 1%.

You have to build up a tolerance to topical cayenne capsaicin the same way you have to build up to eating the hottest peppers.

Don't apply the product with your bare hand. It is difficult to wash off. Use a q-tip or wear a latex glove. You will want to avoid getting it on any broken or sensitive skin. Especially avoid bringing it into contact with mucus membranes like your eyes.

You can neutralize hot pepper capsaicin with cows milk or a damp piece of bread.

Not everyone can use topical capsaicin creams, but they really work for those who can stand the heat and are a nice alternative to oral analgesics which can damage your stomach and liver, or elevate your blood pressure.

Capsaicin products have a cumulative effect. It takes 2-3 weeks of daily use before you can expect the desired results.

The longer you use a capsaicin ointment, the less hot it will feel. When you can no longer feel the heat, it's time to trade up to a stronger concentration. Or you could simply apply your current product more liberally or more often.

Capsaicin cream will not cure any of the conditions mentioned here. The pain relief will only continue as long as the product is used.
