Niobe is an evergreen clematis in the southern end of its hardiness range (USDA zones 3b-9a). It is deciduous in cold climates.
The medium to dark green, textured and often reflexed leaves of this 8-12 foot vine are attractive although they can be difficult to see when the plant is in bloom.
The bloom is the standard single clematis flower only bigger. At 6-8 inches across these red clematis flowers are show stoppers. The flowers open deep red and fade to magenta so you will see different shades on the vine at the same time.

This large flowered hybrid clematis is quite versatile. It can be used to stunning effect in many ways.
It is small enough to be grown in a large container. Clematis climbs by curling its leaf stalks around thin supports, so train it up a trellis with narrow cross bars.
You can allow Clematis Niobe to scramble through a tall shrub without worry that it will shade or choke the other plant out.
With its stems pinned along the ground, it makes a delectable ground cover. Or train it on a white picket fence for a striking color contrast.
However you decide to use it, this long blooming clematis is sure to be a valuable addition to your spring and summer landscape.

This hybrid Clematis blooms on both old and new wood.
You should cut it back to 12 inches right after you first plant it just to encourage it to form new stems. After this, it needs no further pruning.
This does not mean that you can't ever prune it, only that you don't have to.
If you cut it back hard in the spring, it will still bloom that year but you will lose the flowers that would have formed on last year's wood.
If you feel it needs pruning, wait until after the spring bloom and then trim it as much, or as little, as you like.
